Kansas approves 14 billion budget plan for 2012
Kansas negotiators finalize a 14 billion dollar budget for the 2012 fiscal year with 5 to 6 percent spending cuts. Public schools face the largest cuts, while most agencies see reductions to close a near 500 million shortfall. Governor Brownback says the plan avoids new taxes and prioritizes core government functions.

GCCC may drop soccer add men's golf program
Garden City Community College President Herbert Swender will decide next week if the college drops men's soccer to create a men's golf program. The plan, discussed at Wednesday's Board of Trustees meeting, keeps intercollegiate women's soccer with no women's golf provision and recalls a prior 1993 men’s golf program. Swender cites local course access, regional recruiting, donor interest, and cost reductions as benefits while noting about $40,000 is needed to fund the program.

Kansas drought leaves fields barren and thirsty
In Elkhart and across southwest Kansas, parched grasslands and sparse winter wheat stands reveal a severe drought. Dust swirls as wildfires scorch grass, crops suffer under hot winds, and no rain is forecast for ten days. Ranchers like Bill Barnes lament the lack of moisture and green pastures.
