Governor defends sales tax increase in Kansas
Gov. Mark Parkinson defended the 2010 tax package, arguing the tax hike will protect state programs and cut political fallout. He urged tea party activists to set aside anger briefly as lawmakers approved an $8.2 billion 10 year transportation plan and a $13.7 billion budget funded by raising the sales tax from 5.3 to 6.3 percent. Parkinson said the measures strengthen Kansas finances for the next four years and reduce the need for further cuts, though a 2012 deficit remains likely but manageable.
