Winter wheat forecast down nationwide amid drought and freeze

Nationwide winter wheat production expected at 1.5 billion bushels, a 20 percent drop from last year, based on 34 million acres with 44 bushels per acre. Kansas, the top producer, sees only a 4 percent drop as cool wet weather aided recovery and April freezes spared mature wheat. Texas and Oklahoma suffered major losses from drought and a spring freeze, while southern Kansas was touched by the cold. Wet conditions hinder spring wheat planting as regions race to plant before mid May.
