Compromise pension fix clears Kansas Legislature
The Kansas Legislature approved a pension compromise aimed at closing a $7.7 billion funding gap for KPERS. The bill raises annual contributions beginning July 2013 and lets public employees choose higher contributions with threatened benefit cuts, while preserving a study commission to consider a 401(k) style plan, with Brownback expected to sign. The plan maintains a path toward a potential hybrid or 401(k) option for future hires, amid GOP divisions on full 401(k) adoption.
