Donkey Derby Triumph Brightens Otumba Festival
In Otumba Mexico a shaggy burro named El Moro won a 550 dollar purse in a 15 minute race beating two time champ Simpatico. Jockey Juan Carlos Lopez rode without stirrups to claim victory as burros paraded in costumes around the plaza. Veterinarians and race organizers note the festival blends tradition with animal labor satire and concerns over animal welfare.
