Montoya Sentenced For 2009 Garden City Murder
Luis Montoya, 54, was sentenced to 51 years eight months for the August 2009 murder of his sister Maria Montoya in Garden City. He pleaded no contest in March after a trial was set for April 18. Montoya underwent competency evaluations and was determined competent to stand trial.

Kearny County deputy sentenced to probation on sexual exploitation case
A former Kearny County Sheriff's deputy, Timothy Rains, 47, of Lakin, was sentenced to five and a half years in prison with the term suspended and granted 36 months probation for three counts of sexual exploitation of a child. He must serve 60 days in jail as a condition of probation. The case followed a plea agreement after the attorney general’s office dropped 10 counts. A 18-year-old testified about the relationship beginning with text messages and photos taken while she was a minor.
