Legislature OKs budget in the early morning hours

Kansas lawmakers passed a late night budget deal with a projected $27 million shortfall this year and $81 million next year, assuming Gov. Brownback makes $82 million in cuts and a $115 million highway fund sweep. The measure avoids immediate K-12 cuts while shifting higher education burdens and delaying a $100 million pension payment, as critics warn of ongoing revenue gaps and fiscal stress.
