Gas Shortages Seen In Summer As Kansas Urges Conservation
Topeka AP reported Darrell M. Preeti heads the Office of Emergency Preparedness warning the gasoline supply will tighten this summer with spot shortages. He chairs the Joint Board for Fuel Supply and Transport and will act quickly if problems arise. Trent, a Pittsburg, Kansas resident, said steps are under way to move crude oil to refineries, mostly independents. President Nixon urged voluntary conservation including better maintenance, tire inflation, reduced speeds, and use of smaller cars to curb consumption. Emission standards may be raising fuel use by 300,000 barrels daily, possibly reaching 2 million by 1985. Kansas was declared a disaster area after heavy rains and floods. 60 counties may be included, with federal aid for roads, sewers, water systems, and some aid to individuals. State damage to public facilities is estimated at 2.5 million dollars.
