Pluto Surprises Scientists With Diverse Pluto System
Debra Netburn notes NASA's New Horizons findings from Pluto and its moons. The Science papers highlight ancient cratered terrains, young resurfaced plains, 2 to 3 mile high water ice mountains, nitrogen glaciers, and unexpected washboard and bladed terrains. Charon shows early geological activity, potential cryovolcanism, and Hydra remains unusually reflective after 4 billion years. The study emphasizes weak heat from radioactive decay drives surface changes.
