City to challenge 2010 Census figures for Garden City Finney County
Garden City officials plan to contest the 2010 Census counts showing a population drop from 28,000 in 2000 to 26,658 in 2010, arguing the numbers do not reflect local housing limits and a higher January 2011 estimate of 30,065 for Garden City and 43,008 for Finney County. Kansas immigration bill persists despite panel rejection
Kansas lawmakers debate a contentious immigration bill requiring police to check the status of suspected illegal immigrants and mandating citizenship checks for new hires and public aid applicants. The Judiciary Committee tabled the bill indefinitely, but supporters may seek to revive or amend it in another measure. Critics warn of constitutional issues and potential racial profiling, while business groups say the plan burdens employers and local governments.
