Battle of the Bands draws hundreds to Garden City event

Hundreds of fans from southwest Kansas filled the Clarion Inn parking lot for the 2015 Battle of the Bands. Six groups performed in country and rock categories with $500 prizes each. 49 percent of the votes came from fans, 51 percent from judges. Proceeds benefited Mosaic and the Garden City High School Academy of Arts and Communications.

Neighbors profile: new ag agent brings livestock roots

Kansas State Southwest Area Extension named Katelyn Barthol agriculture and natural resources agent for Finney and surrounding counties. A Wellsville native and Kansas State grad, she grew up in 4H with pigs and calves, and aims to answer questions on agriculture, natural resources, turf, and horticulture while learning the district. She loves swine and plans to connect with K-State resources for local questions.

Brownback seeks more Kansas Highway Patrol troopers amid staffing shortfall

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback urged boosting public safety funding to add highway patrols as the Kansas Highway Patrol reports its lowest staffing since 2005 with 399 troopers, 111 short of the 2006 peak. Twenty one counties lack any trooper, and 34 have only one.
