Steel-Labor Pact Ends Long Dispute with Peaceful Settlement
Pittsburgh AP The United Steelworkers Union and 11 major steel producers reached a historic steel labor agreement on Thursday. The pact avoids a strike, introduces an extended vacation plan for seniors, adds new hospital health and insurance benefits, and costs about 15 cents per man hour. Effective 21 months from Aug 1, it covers the 1964 presidential election period. Both sides may terminate after Jan 1, 1865 with 120 days notice. The deal followed three hours of ratification by the union wage policy committee and praise from Steelworker President McDonald and U.S. Steel executive Cooper. White House welcomed the agreement as Kennedy’s administration studies terms.

The House Appropriations Committee slashed the Defense Department's 1064 budget by almost $2 billion. Rep. George H. Mahon, D-Tex., said the cut would not impede essential military programs and, in fact, represented money the department would likely have spent anyway.
