Colbert, Erickson Lead Open as Palmer-Nicklaus Clash Looms
In the 71st U S Open at Merion, Jim Colbert and Bob Erickson shared the early third round lead at two under par 138, while favorites Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus traded barbs and kept the spotlight. Palmer shot 68 to sit two under, and Nicklaus blamed slow play and pin placements as he defended Merion’s tough course.

Colbert Adopts Seeing Eye Putter to Cure Putts
ARDMORE Pa AP Jim Colbert co leader of the U S Open says most golfers miss putts because they line up straight but swing differently. He uses a odd driver shaped putter with eye correction invented by Vance Elkins of Merit Associates to keep the ball on line. Colbert tied for first at Merion with Bob Erickson after 36 holes as about 18 tour players experiment with the device.
