Ex GI Leaving China Tale of Turncoat Soldiers
The U S consulate general said Andrew Fortuna of Iowa is leaving Red China on Saturday. Fortuna was among 21 U S soldiers captured in the Korean War who refused repatriation after 1953. Seven returned to the U S, one died in Red China, and Samuel Hawkins of Oklahoma City crossed into Hong Kong last February. The Defense Department ordered dishonorable discharges for all turncoats on January 25, 1954, and the Supreme Court ruled they could not be prosecuted for their actions while in the forces.
