Kansas House Rejects Largest State Tax Increase In History

The Kansas House, after an eight hour break, voted 95 to 20 against a more than 400 million dollar tax hike aimed at closing a revenue gap. Gov. Sam Brownback and allies had pressed a coalition to push the measure, but Republicans and Democrats balked, with several defections including Rep. Scott Schwab switching to yes briefly. The debate centered on avoiding more than 6 percent budget cuts and drew opposition from anti tax pledgers led by Americans for Prosperity and Americans for Tax Reform.
