Weather across western and central Kansas is expected to quiet after a weekend of tornadoes high winds hail and heavy rain. Hardest hit was the Mankato area with damage at Garfield and Alden. Swim Classes Begin June 13 At Municipal Pool
Six week summer program starts next Monday and Tuesday mornings at the city pool with about 450 pupils from beginners to junior life savers. E L Droegemueller says 17 instructors will guide 289 city youngsters. Enrollment includes 83 in intermediate, 36 in swimmers, 25 in junior life saving, and only three in senior life saving with one class possibly added if interest grows.

Ford and UAW strike pact creates guaranteed wage plan
DETROIT Ford Motor Co and the CIO United Auto Workers reached a historic guaranteed wage agreement aimed at ending nationwide walkouts by 68 000 of Ford’s 140 000 workers. The package averages above 20 cents per hour and includes boosted pensions to $241 monthly and improved hospital medical benefits. Reuther called it the largest economic package negotiated, with ratification by more than 50 Ford locals likely. The plan offers 60 65 percent of take home pay during layoffs plus unemployment benefits for up to 26 weeks funded by a $55 million trust built from five cents per hour per worker over three years. The agreement, subject to local votes, may set a pattern for the auto industry.
