Fertilizing warm season grasses in Kansas fields
Kansas State University guidance covers nitrogen needs for bermudagrass zoysia and buffalograss. Bermudagrass needs four pounds N per 1000 sq ft across the season with four weekly applications starting in May, last by Aug 15. Zoysia 1.5 to 2 pounds N per 1000 sq ft, split in early June and mid July. Buffalograss one pound N per 1000 sq ft in early June, up to two pounds per season for darker color. Phosphorus and potassium should follow soil test results, with core aeration for root access. Iron may be needed if soil pH is high. The wheat harvest in Finney County begins late June, with the Market Wheat Show at the Finney County Fair July 31–Aug 3. Samples for market wheat must be collected by July 11 and submitted to a grain elevator or Extension Office. The Garden City Farmers Market starts Saturdays at Westlake Hardware-Aaron’s lot, open through summer. For more info, contact the Extension Office at 272-3670.
