Mighty Forty Horse O’s Hogback Parade Draws Eyes
KATHI LOPER profiles Dick Sparrow, Iowa farmer near Zearing who drives the world’s largest four abreast 40 horse hitch in Beef Empire Days parade. Outriders control crowds and repair a broken bridle as Sparrow guides 160 hooves along downtown streets. He compares steering the team to holding back a locomotive, using ten leather lines across a 100 foot span. Sparrow farms 1100 acres of corn and maintains 400 head of cattle, building from a six horse to a 12 horse hitch before taking the 40 horse outfit in 1972 for a Milwaukee circus parade revival.
