Salaries top talk as teacher pad ratified
The Garden City school board tentatively ratified the teachers' contract and approved a 55 cent per hour raise for classified staff while tabling principal and department head salary packages. A $12,400 base salary was noted in the agreement, with concerns over funding and the scope of fringe benefits.

Rural center expansion plan okayed
Garden City School Board approved a plan to add a 520 square foot classroom and a 360 square foot media center to the Pierceville-Plymell Rural Center. If state approval comes, bids will be set June 15 with work hoped to be underway before August. The project aims to relieve 1981-82 enrollment strain and moves a library from the main hallway to meet fire and tornado safety standards. Architect Joe Benson estimates 35 to 40 dollars per square foot, staying under a 50 thousand dollar cap, and the plan reserves space for future expansion including two more classrooms and larger facilities.

Highest starting pay at Ulysses and Johnson districts in Kansas
Kansas districts report varying contract settlements as of June 1 with 122 districts, 40 percent, settled. Ulysses and Johnson lead starting teacher salaries at $13,300 annually for 1981-82, followed by Spearville at $13,089 and several districts at $13,000. The pace of settlements is the slowest in state history due to delayed funding decisions and court actions.

Holcomb budget talks and zoning rulings surfaced
In Holcomb the budget discussion noted a 20 fold cost jump and plans for expansion. Commissioners debated funding channels for the Russell Child Development Center with county funds possibly shifting to Southwest Developmental Services Inc. County attorney Paul Handy will review funding routes. Zoning actions included Tony Cruz facing a required move of a house and two trailer homes for a half acre lot due to water and septic constraints and noncompliance with the Uniform Building Code, while neighbors complained as the land nears city limits. Commissioners denied Cruz a variance 2-1 and ordered 90 days to relocate. In contrast, Earl Strong received a variance for two trailers on an acre along US 83 with Huschka voting no.
