In Scott City, Janet Gandy eleven months old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Gandy, broke both legs above the knee after a bed fall last week. This is her second double leg fracture, and she recently also broke her collar bone.
Newspapermen arrive for the 68th annual meeting in Syracuse with newsmen college representatives and sales staff present. Mickey James president and Syracuse Journal publisher has planned a noon luncheon and an evening banquet at the Memorial building alongside golf and a tour of the new state lake on Plumb Creek.
Tomorrow marks the first full season at Dighton’s new pool which opened late last August. The facility received a fresh coat of paint and numerous umbrellas around the edge. The city adds a merry-go-rounds swings and a giant stride in the residential park as a recreation upgrade while a lighted softball diamond sits atop the park. Bob Gumm and Ronald Stafford will manage the pool this summer.
Kansas State Employment Service sets up harvest labor offices in several counties with early estimates of harvest beginning as soon as June 15 in southern counties.
Robert Kirk reports K State alumni will meet new athletic director Bebe Lee at a large gathering in Scott Park next Sunday noon June 10. The fried chicken event invites alumni, former students, prospective students and friends with the Wildcat athletic staff including Bus Mertes and Tex Winter in attendance.
Martha Ann Monroe, a five year old from Ulysses, wins a bicycle by tossing balloons at a service station contest. Her balloon traveled from Ulysses to Aubry Texas near Dallas, a distance of over 500 miles, setting a record for the event.
County Attorney E F Russell obtained a temporary injunction to shut the Alamo nightclub and seeks a permanent padlock order after a party attended by many high school students allegedly involved underage drinking. District Judge L L Morgan will decide.
Delbert Leg Colvin, 31, drowned late yesterday in the Kansas River near Kansas City. A companion, George Dillon, said Colvin stood up in their boat and fell overboard.
Western Kansas sugar beet area says labor shortages are mild as 45 Mexican workers are brought in to work on onions tomatoes and sugar beets. They join 25 from Mexico and 20 from Colorado, on four week contracts with possible extension. Officials note strong demand in Nebraska Colorado and other states totals around 15,000 braceros for Central and Mountain beet regions.
Nearly 2,000 Finney county vehicles underwent checks in the May vehicle safety program. Police Chief Mitchel Geisler said 885 cars and trucks were inspected at the E Ful ton safety lane and another 911 were taken to garages for free inspections. Under 10 percent failed to get OK stickers with 102 cars and 30 trucks rejected for defects. 34 of these were repaired and approved. Local garages supplied mechanics and tire experts to assist officers.
The Eisner Bladel gas well, about 12 miles north of Garden City, was paused at 2,350 feet this morning for rig repairs. The Texas Co. is placing the well on section 1 22 33, drilled by Burris Drilling Co. of Garden City.

Salaries rise with a new second grade position, and the annual meeting time moves to evenings starting next year.

Six persons were injured when the Elk River bridge on U S Highway 160 near Longton, Kansas collapsed today. Two cars plunged about 40 feet to the river bed. Injured include Ernest Parrish and his family Scott 12 Owenda 4 and Samuel Parrish 84 of Burton plus Clarence Bentley of Wichita. They were hospitalized at Sedan.
New York City health officials say after July 1 pigeons will no longer be protected birds. Officials cite rising numbers and nuisance level as reasons for removing pigeons from the protected list.
Two French divisions with dive bombers fought to crush a large Algerian rebel force trapped in the Gates of Iron triangle of the Biban Mountains. France reported 400 rebel losses and captures, while infantry and mechanized units joined the offensive as artillery and planes pounded the cliff-held rebels southwest of Bougie along the Soumman Valley.

COFEYVILLE The body of Carl Henry Bennett age 12 from southeast of Independence Kansas was found in the Verdigris River about five miles north of here yesterday by two fishermen. His bicycle was found on the river bank Tuesday. Authorities report no cause for the tragedy and are investigating.
Volunteer firemen battled a second blaze in four days at the old courthouse owned by Alonzo Finnup. The 4 40 p m fire damaged a second floor bathroom near a hot water heater. hallway plaster washed by water. Cause undetermined. A resident reported an earlier fire in a trasn box downstairs and a screen door fire in the main hall. An occupant on the second floor moved out claiming too many fires. I H Stanley, owner of the ground floor office supply business, reported yesterday's alarm.
A U S Army delegation led by Frank H Higgins will tour the Parsons Kansas ordnance plant on June 13 to evaluate converting it to modern production. The visit includes two generals, two colonels, Sen Scheppel, Sen Carlson, Rep George, and Harry Darby. The plant reactivation aims to resume 105 millimeter shell work, hiring about 400, after payroll had fallen to 358.
Robert Rees of Coffeyville was elected resident of the Kansas Master 4-H Club at Kansas State College during the annual meeting tied to the 1956 Roundup. Other officers were chosen with him in Manhattan Kas this week.

Western Union workers stayed on the job as negotiations resume Monday for new labor contracts after the old ones expired at midnight Thursday. Brief walkouts occurred in New York, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, disrupting service in 10 states for about four hours while roughly 30,000 Western Union employees represented by the Commercial Telegraphers Union and about 4,000 in the New York area represented by the American Communications Assn. continued normal operations nationwide.
In Saint Joseph Missouri the Armour and Company packing plant walkout by 1300 United Packinghouse Workers ended after two weeks with a vote to return to work. The dispute began over a worker injured at home last March and ruled unfit for duties by company physicians.
