MRI screening beats mammograms for high risk breast cancer
A Dutch study in the New England Journal of Medicine finds MRI detects about twice as many tumors as mammography in high risk women with BRCA or similar mutations. 1,909 participants across six centers, average three years, 45 cancers analyzed. MRI identified 32, mammography 18. MRI yielded more false positives and referrals but improved early detection in inherited risk cases.
