Holcomb mulls restarting volunteer fire program

Holcomb officials reviewed the fire department’s operating guidelines after disbanding in April due to volunteer shortages. The city ordinance requires at least 10 firefighters, prompting discussion on whether former volunteers may serve and if operations can run with fewer during a transition period. Council will consider revising the rule as Garden City uses full response anyway.

Lawmakers eye consolidation talk as school finance debate nears

In Topeka a special committee flags consolidation as a topic for January when the Legislature revisits the school finance formula. Critics say small districts cost more per pupil than busing to larger districts. Kansas districts under 1,725 students receive extra state subsidies, with the lowest enrollments getting the most per pupil. The state spent 225 million dollars on low enrollment subsidies last year. Some districts are far from neighbors, complicating consolidation.
