Subistence Farmer Lives on City Plot in Lawrence
Tim Coughenour, 53, sustains himself on about 600 dollars yearly by growing wheat, corn, soybeans and vegetables on a one fifth acre in North Lawrence. He bikes, hauls goods in a small trailer, and spends half the year preparing for winter while studying and visiting friends. He calls for a community of self-reliant neighbors and notes most work has no real purpose in modern economy. He and about a dozen volunteers plant and harvest this year’s winter wheat, aiming to yield 350 pounds with 100 pounds shared.
