Effects of poor harvest to crop up in economy
The economy of southwest Kansas may weaken in 2011 due to crop losses from wheat harvest and a forecast drought driven fall. Garden City Co-op chief executive John McClelland argues the industry rides cycles, noting three to four strong years prior and that droughts eventually average out. The co-op expects 35 to 40 percent less grain than normal. See Wheat, Page A5.

GCCC to Expand Talent Search With $1 Million Grant
Garden City Community College will continue its Educational Talent Search program with a five year grant totaling more than 1 million dollars. The grant supports about 650 at risk students in Garden City Public Schools and will start September 1 each year. Dean Cathy McKinley credited U.S. Senator Moran for securing the award and noted the need given Finney County’s high low income households. The program aids at risk graduates as they pursue college, with participants drawn from Garden City High School and multiple middle and intermediate centers. The director’s position has been vacant since late May and a search will begin soon.
