Helms, Veteran North Carolina Senator, Dies at 86

Former Sen Jesse Helms, longtime conservative firebrand and staunch anti liberal figure, died on the Fourth of July at age 86 in Raleigh. He served three contentious decades in Congress amid repeated clashes with liberals and sometimes fellow Republicans. He died of natural causes at a Raleigh convalescent home, surrounded by remarks calling him a patriot in the Jefferson Adams mold.
