Weekend Ice Storm Grips Southwest Kansas Towns

An icy weekend left trees broken, roads slick, and power outages across the area. Wheatland Electric reported 52 customers without power in Finney and Kearny counties, with restore estimates by 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Scott County had 106 outages, restored by 7 p.m. A5 noted, while Hugoton and Cimarron had outages with unclear restoration times. Temperature near 31 or higher slowed ice buildup, and Garden City crews treated roads with salt and sand as more precipitation loomed Monday. The National Weather Service warned of continued ice and snow showers into Monday morning.

Brownback pushes highway fund sweep despite pushback

Kansas Governor Brownback plans to take nearly 600 million from the highway fund over two and a half years, widening a pattern that has moved 1.3 billion since 2011 to cover budget gaps. Critics warn of delayed expansions and lost jobs as departments shift to preservation and maintenance while new construction stalls.
