Weekly nondaily papers ride steady in Kansas
In Kansas from 2000 to 2009 the number of daily papers fell from 47 to 35 while nondailies rose from 197 to 200. Publishers credit loyal ads, lower debt, and less Internet reliance for resilience. Blue Rapids Free Press and Wamego Times exemplify smaller papers weathering the downturn. Online classifieds like Craigslist stay unprofitable in smaller towns.
