State moves toward pilot animal identification program
Washington joins six states in developing a pilot to trace diseased animals within 48 hours. Valeria Loveland says confidentiality and cost are key concerns for cattle producers as they face potential access limits and proprietary data protections. Spillman notes the federal plan would collect only essential data such as ID numbers farm or premise IDs and animal movement dates to enable traceouts during outbreaks.

Moscow Cotton Gin Expands Operations and Exports
The Moscow facility enlarges its cotton processing line with modules arriving from farms. Trucks weigh modules, computers record data, and a module feeder feeds rotating cylinders that break modules for processing. Cotton is dried, cleaned, separated from seed, conditioned, formed into batting, pressed, autostrapped, and baled at about 500 pounds each. Two hundred fourteen bales are loaded weekly for Liberal warehouse, then marketed globally for denim use.

Canadian producers argue BSE risks are low in younger cattle and press for market reopening amid losses and a NAFTA lawsuit. Canada, claiming minimal risk, has 14 million cattle and plans to spend up to C$488 million to support beef exports.
