In Topeka the Juvenile Justice Authority plans to convert the closed Atchison Juvenile Correctional Facility into a 56 bed group home run by a private company. About 420 youths are in group homes with 40 on a waiting list. The Atchison site closed December 8 as part of budget cuts under Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. Twenty eight boys were moved to Topeka and Larned facilities, and 67 jobs were eliminated.
