Melvin Taylor of 603 East Maple reported his valuable hunting dog was stolen yesterday but the dog later returned home. Rural firemen were summoned at 2:35 PM today to put out a grass fire near the city east of the airport.
Portland investigators charged a blind man William Clarence Peddicord and his sister in law Joyce Keller in an $50 000 extortion bomb plot against Meier and Frank department store eight months ago. The blast injured a few and caused the store to close briefly.
Senate Internal Security subcommittee orders public hearings starting January 4 on alleged Communist infiltration of the press radio and television. Chairman Eastland states numerous witnesses will be called, most already examined in executive sessions.
Vandergrift Pennsylvania reports a 17 year old, John Fallone, killed three people and wounded two, then died after a 16 hour manhunt. His target was Gladys Smail, 15, hospitalized in critical condition with chest wounds. Police officer Gus Zanos was wounded but survived. Fallone was found with a 22 caliber rifle and 500 rounds as a sharpshooter ended the standoff.
CHICAGO witnesses before the House Un-American Activities Committee may testify after being granted immunity. Ellis G. Olim, 44, a Chicago Land Clearance Commission official named as a former Communist, said he would testify if immunity is granted. The committee adjourned to March 5 and will pursue Olims immunity with full committee consent needed before seeking federal court action.
Kansas City market report shows wheat prices 2.15 to 2.19 for No 2 hard and dark, corn at 1.41 to 1.48 for No 2 white and 1.35 to 1.39 for No 3 mixed, oats at 69 to 75 percent white, milo maize 2.16 to 2.23, rye 1.14 to 1.17, barley 1.05 to 1.10, soybeans 2.29 to 2.91. Livestock arrivals include cattle 300, calves 25, hogs 1,800 steady with Thursday averages, sows 7.50 to 9.00, sheep 200 steady with prime lambs 16 to 17 dollars and ewes 4.50.
Chicago grains traded steadily for most of the session with wheat rye and soybeans leading gains at midday but retreating by close. Wheat futures closed higher while corn was flat to higher and rye and soybeans posted mixed moves with December and January contracts showing modest shifts. Open interest in wheat futures rose from the prior session as purchases and weekly totals indicated continuing activity.
