Ogallala Aquifer proposals seek market tools and flex accounts
A Kansas discussion on conserving the Ogallala Aquifer outlines four proposals: local water banks for market based relocation, expanded multi year flex accounts for crop water management, stricter LEMAs with potential mandatory reductions, and corrective measures approved by the Chief Engineer. The Ogallala Aquifer Committee, formed by the Kansas Water Authority, gathered after the Colby Economic Summit to explore options as aquifer levels decline across eight states.

Ridership Grows as CityLink Expands Transit Use
Garden City transit officials report rising ridership with workers from restaurants hotels box stores and fast food citing lower costs than car ownership. With the northeast high school opening next fall a bigger August 2012 surge is expected as students outside bus routes begin riding. The transit center at 1008 N 11th St serves four routes. Walmart and Dillons stores are major transfer points attracting 23 or more riders at a time. Routes adapt to usage, but changes avoid harming riders who depend on schedules. The Mini Bus has run since the 1970s with 71 423 rides in 2011 70 020 in 2010 and 60 915 in 2009. Fares include 1 per ride 30 per month with half fares for students seniors and eligible low income riders. Children 5 and under ride free with a guardian.
