Brownback unveils plan to overhaul Kansas school funding
Kansas Governor Sam Brownback proposes a new education funding formula aimed at aiding rural districts with modest increases while not adding dollars for major urban districts. The plan allows local boards more spending flexibility and property tax authority, pledging no district loses overall state aid in 2013 14 and promising a small base aid rise. AP analysis shows 182 districts would gain, capped at 6 percent, led by Lansing with about 2,600 students. More than half of districts have under 500 students and 104 districts neither gain nor lose state funds. The plan affects Wichita, Kansas City Wichita, Olathe, Blue Valley, Shawnee Mission, and others.

Holcomb considers hotel site near highway intersection
Finney County Economic Development Corp. interim president Lona Duvall told Holcomb city commissioners a hotelier seeking 50 to 60 rooms may build near the U S 50 400 overpass at North Big Lone Road. The plan includes two eateries and a possible gas station with a convenience store on about two acres of a 38 acre site. The project would rely on local investor ownership to keep returns in the community. The developer called the location a gold mine benefiting traffic to Tyson Fresh Meats and Sunflower Electric Power Co. The FCEDC seeks council buy in to extend utilities and cover costs.
