Family survives house fire after stairs fill with smoke

Stanton County firefighter Wendell Housholder, a retired Army Reserve sergeant, faced a kitchen fire on December 3 that engulfed the home. He rescued his wife and adult daughter, guiding them from the smoke filled upstairs as they fled to safety.

Tuba Christmas Brings Holiday Cheer to Garden City Parade

Crowds gathered on Grant Avenue for the seventh annual Tuba Christmas in downtown Garden City. Garden City Community College Band Director Jim McAllister led volunteers from southwest Kansas through festive carols such as Deck the Tubas Rudolph the Red-Nosed Tuba and O Christmas Tuba. The event closed with We wish you a Merry Christmas and a shout of And a shiny new phonium.

Lopez the Mysterious Voice: Mexican-born LA musician

Lopez Rafael Lopez, 56, from Urupan Michoacan, recalled how guitar and violin lessons bored him as a child. He moved to Los Angeles at 16, credits his father for inspiring his music, and performs locally in bars and fairs under the moniker La Voz del Misterio.

Lopez Finds Music and New Life in Garden City

Lopez, a baritone with vibrato, moved from Los Angeles to Garden City in 1998 to work at Tyson Fresh Meats after prior layoffs. He now pursues more music and local performances aiming for an agent, recalling how a meat packing job sign led him to relocate and start a new life away from LA’s violence and noise.
