Homeless family enrolls children in USD 457 amid moves
A New Mexico family of nine stayed in a van and enrolled four children in USD 457 schools. Migrant program liaison Vilma Orrantia described homelessness as living in vehicles, motels, shelters, or other nonresidential spaces. The family split up, with some members staying in Liberal while the children remained with an aunt. Orrantia noted rising homeless student numbers from 43 in 2007 to 214 identified so far in 2011-12, and explained McKinney-Vento rights include immediate enrollment and free lunch, with district support including transportation, supplies, and referrals. Donations from the community and Finnup Foundation Trust aid these efforts.
