Senate GOP fails to bring up immigration bill

Senate Democrats blocked a GOP bid to bring to a vote a STEM based immigration bill that would grant about 55,000 green cards annually to master and PhD graduates. The measure faced Democratic opposition over policy tradeoffs and potential impacts on other visa programs. House Republicans promoted it as a precursor to broader immigration reform next year amid plans from both chambers and the White House.

Washington approves same sex marriage law signed by governor

Gov. Chris Gregoire signed the measure legalizing same sex marriage in Washington state. The law takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday with licenses available in King and Thurston counties, and ceremonies possible starting Sunday due to a three day waiting period. Previously married out of state couples retain validity. churches face no obligation to perform marriages.
