Lincoln School principal Bill Lewis explains World Tape for Education program linking Garden City pupils with Dowerin Australia. Students learn articulation via tape exchange, singing and questions, while Russell’s Dowerin class prepares its end of year program before moving to Kolgooli as principal. the project fosters language arts and cross country insights.
Special recognition was given to 42 scouters promoted to Eagle Scout at the Santa Fe Council ceneciation dinner held at St Marys Center. Recipients span many troops and towns including Garden City Liberal Dodge City Sublette Elkhart Ulysses Ness City and Olther. The Eagle Scouters were among 1700 promoted in the past year across the council.
Mary Lou Boxter, senior at Garden City High School, traveled to Lawrence to compete in Watkins Scholarship semifinals. The selection honors academic potential and character, based on her National Merit score and high school evaluation. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Boxler of 516 Chesterfield.

Willie Gaffney Jr infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Gaffney of 1802 W Kansas was stillborn Sunday evening. Surviving are five brothers and four sisters, including Dorothy and Willie May at home and Lois Taylor Wichita. Graveside services set for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Valley View Cemetery with Rev. E. E. Sanders officiating. Friends may call Garland Funeral Home today until 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Graveside services were to be held for Ricky Ray Truax infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Truax in Tetlebaum at Valley View Cemetery. He was stillborn Sunday at St. Catherine Hospital. Surviving parents a sister Sheila Dean maternal grandfather Vinton Clark Osceola paternal grandmother Mrs Ida White Lynch and more. Funeral services for Mrs Helena Lipke Meng 77 of 707 N 7th will be at St Marys Catholic Church at 10 a m Thursday. Born April 20 1889 in Aleppo she moved to a farm near Ingalls in 1929 and to Garden City in 1945. She married Otto A Meng on June 18 1907 at Waterloo. She was member of St Marys Church and the Altar Society. Surviving are four sons.
Mrs Bertha Irene Gray 51 former Garden City resident died Wednesday in Yucapia California. Funeral services were Saturday at Emmerson Mortuary Yucapia. Born October 21 1914 she lived in Garden City 42 years before moving to Yucapia nine years ago. Active Royal Neighbors member. Survived by widower in Yucapia a son Dennis E Gray Redlands California a brother William E Wilkerson Las Vegas Nevada father Ollie M Wilkerson 301% E Fulton and two other relatives.
