Kansas Soldiers' Home at Fort Dodge barred from admitting new patients
A Kansas Veterans home in Fort Dodge cannot admit new patients after an August 16 inspection found nearly 30 deficiencies. The report cited failures to discharge planning and to notify physicians of major changes in resident conditions, with cases of poor evaluation and care. Officials will review progress in two weeks, and continued deficiencies could trigger corrective action. The governor's ombudsman and VA review are involved in bringing the facility back into compliance.

Five Points intersection plans reviewed by city officials
City staff reviewed preliminary plans for the Five Points intersection where Kansas, Buffalo Jones and Taylor avenues meet. Officials kept a four-way light system with traffic lights and pavement markings, adding a video detection system and an emergency vehicle preemption system to improve flow and safety. Pedestrian countdown signals will aid crossings, with project cost around 197000 dollars and plan submission to KDOT by October 21, aiming for construction in March or April.

Defense seeks dismissal of Hall murder indictment
Defense for Edwin R. Hall argues the grand jury that indicted him was convened for a different purpose and overstepped its mandate. Hall, 26, is charged with capital murder rape kidnapping and sodomy in the abduction of 18 year old Kelsey Smith from a Target in Overland Park on June 2 and the discovery of her body four days later in Missouri. The indictment could allow prosecutors to bypass a preliminary hearing.
