Firefighters responded to a bolt of lightning striking the control panel at a pump house at the east end of Chestnut street. Damage was limited to wiring inside the pump house on land owned by the Fellowship Baptist church.
Paris plans new negotiations with Moroccan nationalists to establish a representative government in the protectorate. The French Cabinet debated Moroccan policy for two days and endorsed Faure’s approach, targeting a new government by Sept. 12. Potential replacement of Resident General Gilberto Grandoval and talks with Istiqlal continue amid unrest in August.
A four year old, Gary Wayne Wicker, was struck and killed by a car while dashing across the street in front of his home on his way to buy candy. The child’s parents are Mr and Mrs Wayne Wicker. His father operates a tire shop locally.
A drunken man called Vice President Richard Nixon's Boston hotel room and threatened to kill him. Police questioned and released the unidentified man after finding no weapon. The caller, from a hotel lobby booth, told an aide he planned to come up and kill Nixon.
James Allison Travis of Woodward Oklahoma was found guilty in police court of driving while intoxicated and transporting an open bottle. He could not pay the $125 fine imposed by Judge Clyde Daniel and was committed to jail.
Chicago and Missouri rain halted losses on the board of trade with cereals briefly turning higher. Wheat rose one and three quarters to around 1.90 and soybeans held steady, while corn and oats advanced modestly as moisture coverage prompted covering by short sellers. Prices fluctuated through the day but gains were not sustained.
Kansas City livestock and grain markets show steer and heifer classes steady to mixed, with good to choice fed steers around 19.00 to 22.50 per hundredweight, cows up to 25 higher, vealers near 19.00, and stocker calves 15.00 to 18.65. Grain prices list corn around 1.40 to 1.45, soybeans 2.36 to 2.41, and oats and byproducts reported. Wichita livestock mirrors steady to weak trends with hogs down about 25 points and spring lambs 17.00 to 18.00.

The Agriculture Department announced development of a new hybrid grain sorghum that may transform U S farming. Limited seed will be available next spring with 20 to 49 percent higher yields than open-pollinated varieties. By five years over 10 million acres could shift to hybrids, mainly on semi arid lands, from Kansas Texas Nebraska and Oklahoma. Sorghum, a grass like corn, yields grain at the top tassel and is used for livestock feed and human products.

Former resident D W Patton died in Pueblo Colorado after a career at the railroad station here He is survived by a son Wayne of Mayflower California two sisters one brother and his wife of the home Funeral service and burial will be in Pueblo
Funeral services for David G. Frazer who died Sunday night will be at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday at the Lakin Presbyterian church. Interment will follow in the Syracuse cemetery.
Funeral services for Edwin Roberts, 59, who died Sunday, will be conducted Wednesday by the Rev. J. C. Stork of Garden City and the Rev. H. C. Hackett of Plains at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist church. Interment will follow at Valley View cemetery.
