Disaster service classes offered by Garden City Red Cross

The Garden City Area American Red Cross announces free disaster services courses for volunteers. Sessions cover Introduction to Disaster Services, Damage Assessment, Mass Care, Family Services and Emergency Assistance, Shelter Operations and Health Services, with dates from Sept. 10 to Nov. 12 at 210 Fulton Terrace. Garden City High School class of 1982 reunion kicks off with a noon golf tournament at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. Boeing to shut down Wichita plant if union strikes

West Nile virus spreads to 35 Kansas counties

Kansas health officials report seven new counties with West Nile cases bringing total to 35. Horse cases found in Cloud Kingman Leavenworth Mitchell and Saline while a crow in Bourbon and a bluejay in Lincoln tested positive. No human cases yet. Vaccine exists for horses. Most bitten people have no symptoms or only flu like illness. A small percentage may develop encephalitis.

Mercer Gallery Opens 13th Season With Montes Display

Mercer Gallery at Garden City Community College launches its 13th art season with a Montes exhibition by self taught Colorado artist Jessie M Montes. The show runs Tuesday through Sept 25, noon to 4 pm weekdays and 2 to 5 pm Sundays in the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building west wing. Free admission. Montes, from Canon City, creates landscapes portraits and still lifes from corrugated cardboard and has exhibited in New York Dallas Santa Fe and San Antonio. The gallery plans eight exhibitions for 2002-03 including statewide touring shows and various media from postcards to ceramics. The season includes diverse events and dates yet to be announced by director David Kinder.

Nuss named to Kansas Supreme Court

Salina attorney Lawton Nuss, 49, was named to the Kansas Supreme Court by Gov. Bill Graves. He will fill one of three upcoming vacancies as Justice Ed Larson retires. The swearing in date and bench placement are to be announced. The court plans to hear cases on Sept. 9.
