Sumaya wins Mr American GI Forum at national USHGF event
Sumaya Joaquin of Garden City, a Garden City Community College sophomore, captured the Mr American GI Forum title at the 53rd annual US Hispanic Veterans organization conference in Chicago August 6 to 12. He earned a $1,000 scholarship and qualified at state level in June, beating five finalists from across the states. He focuses his talk on ethnic diversity, addressing racism language and bilingual education, comparing the melting pot to a cultural salad. He plans to meet President Bush and possibly Vicente Fox, with Kansas officials and family praising his achievement. He credits GCCC staff and involvement in the Hispanic leadership groups and Jazz Band and Latin Heat. Leticia Rodriguez won Miss American GI Forum.
