Santa Fe's Decline Ends Kansas Ghost Town Era
Santa Fe, once the Haskell County seat with 1800 residents and multiple businesses, failed to gain a railroad path or keep the county seat, losing out to Sublette. Despite efforts with Satanta, the town dwindled after crop failures and transport shifts, leaving only the courthouse and a few structures as the rest moved away. The 1918 and 1919 elections sealed its fate as the smallest Kansas county seat.

State to ease layoffs and broaden employee rewards in reforms
Kansas aims to revise rules to allow subjective layoffs and a preference system for rehiring within state government. Proposals include removing the paid time off ban as a reward, capping unused sick leave at 80 hours for retirees, and widening hiring flexibility for unclassified staff. Public comment is invited at 1 30 pm September 27 at the London State Office Building. The rules could take effect within a month after final steps as the budget strain continues.
