Budget squeeze across counties hits local offices
Southwest Kansas counties cope with more than $1 million loss in state transfers as budgets tighten. Grant County cuts include a deputy loss and 20 percent reductions across departments with a 0.30 mill hike. Hospital and road department cuts, staff reductions, and higher taxes affect homeowners and raise questions about fiscal restraint. Stevens County faces a 36.746 mill levy for 2004, up from 32.015 last year, with a $36 increase on a $100,000 home.
