Water worries spur drought talk in southwest Kansas
In southwest Kansas towns and villages as drought nears its first anniversary, officials warn the Ogallala High Plains Aquifer is strained as record heat and demand bite. Mark Rude of Groundwater Management District No. 3 says water is drawn from the bank to meet municipal, stock, and irrigation needs while aquifer levels reach an all time low. Farmers and ranchers face reduced yields as dry conditions persist, threatening the regional economy and water management efforts.
