The board of education discussed replacing old equipment and studying cost to remodel the N Eighth building for vehicle storage as a garage for school buses. Best offer on the building was 7500, below appraised value.
Friends of Gus Norton may pay respects until 9 p.m. tonight at Garland chapel. Norton, a Finney county pioneer, died Sunday at age 78. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Methodist church. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery.
Corn led gains on the board with futures up near three cents at midday before stalling. Soybeans then climbed as weather and demand shifted attention, while wheat and oats posted smaller rises and market activity showed strong open interest and weekly buying.
Kansas City market shows cattle activity with feeders steady to uneven, hogs generally lower, and sheep steady to lower. High value fed cattle priced around 23.25 for 900 lb yearlings and 22.50 to 24.25 for 1150-1200 lb steers, cows and bulls mixed. Kansas City grain notes include wheat around 2.11 to 2.29 and corn near 1.56 to 1.64. Wichita listings mirror softer hogs and steady vealers, with slaughter steers and heifers near 20.00-21.00 and hogs mostly 25 lower.

In Casablanca and ports across French Morocco nearly 200 people were arrested after weekend riots during the Abd-el-Kebir feast. Reports said 30 were killed in Moulay Idriss and Marrakech, with 128 arrests at Port Lyautey and 60 at Moulay Idriss.
Mrs. Doris Hovard, 18, Kansas City, charged with assault with intent to kill after a July 8 abduction and beating of Officer Robert Holcomb. She was arrested in St. Louis after allegedly accompanying two men who robbed a drug store for 120 dollars. Police say she admitted knowing the officer was locked in an abandoned car.
HOLLYWOOD The Screen Actors Guild has set Friday for the start of a strike by all actors in filmed television shows. A spokesman for the guild said the move follows unresolved contract talks and would halt filming across major studios.
Police said Charlie Watts 31 killed his estranged wife Bobby Jean Watts 36 at their Wichita home last night then shot himself. They left behind a 7-year-old son. They had been married since 1946. The report notes 40 weekly TV series shooting in New York and Hollywood and that John L. Dales said 96.3 percent of the membership authorized the strike.
