Second Polio Shots to Be Given This Week

William Williams six year old son of Mr and Mrs Arthur C Williams confined to St Catherine hospital with first local polio encephalitis case progressing just fine. He will probably be moved to Hutchinson this weekend for physical therapy treatment. Dick Harper 11 year old Garden Cry youth injured in swimming pool mishap April may progress greatly and may be moved home in weeks if his condition improves.

Finney County Pioneer Samuel Norton Dies at 79

Samuel Norton a longtime Finney county resident, born in Missouri February 19, 1876, died of cancer at St. Catherine hospital. A retired farmer, he moved to Finney in 1914 and helped run the Kalvesta post office and store for about 30 years. Surviving are his widow Alice, a daughter, 12 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Two sons preceded him, Verne and Lawrence Boots Norton. Funeral services Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Methodist church with Revs Franklyn Edwards and Henry Jongema. interment Valley View cemetery.

Slow Train Triumph Over Pony Express In Oregon Race

In Roseburg Oregon a late night grudge race saw a modern night train outrun the pony express anchor man by seven minutes near Eugene. About 75 riders including seven women donned Western garb to dramatize the clash as Southern Pacific faced possible branch line shutdown. The Nightcrawler nickname drew playful praise from Vernall Quayle Portland general passenger agent who lauded the mail delivery by the iron horse and crew.

Belgian Youth to Visit Garden City on Farm Exchange

Jean Collard a 22 year old Belgian farm youth arrives in Garden City for a two week stay as part of an International Farm Youth Exchange. He travels here from Montana after visiting rural life in the United States since June and will visit two Kansas families before returning to Belgium. His stay with the Russell family accompanies Frances, another exchange student in Finland. He comes from a 225 acre farm growing wheat sugar beets and barley focusing on sugar beet production and farm mechanization.

Four Men Arrested After Fight Outside Local Cafe

Four men, three from Marienthal and one from Garden City, were arrested early Sunday outside Austin's cafe at 308 E Fulton. They posted $10 bonds on disorderly conduct charges after a dispute escalated into a fight. Named arrestees: John Anthony Benning, Michael Lawrence Naab, Theodore John Graff, and Carl Edmond Curl.

Garden City announcer hurt in Colorado crash

Dave Kupka, Garden City announcer for KGAR, escaped serious injury in an early Sunday auto accident near Lamar, Colorado. He was briefly hospitalized and released. details of the crash were not immediately available.

Finney County to hold second round polio clinics at same sites

Finney County will conduct a second round of Salk polio vaccinations for first and second graders at the same school sites as the initial clinics St Marys Jones Garfield Hutchinson Alta Brown and Lincoln starting at 9 am this Wednesday Dr Don Williams county health officer says vaccine is plentiful and nearly 800 children are expected to receive their second shot Parents of eligible children will be informed by mail about times and locations Volunteers and more clinic assistants are still needed with eight more workers required for the drive.

Doctors To Get Polio Vaccine This Month

Private physicians and public health agencies will begin receiving Salk polio vaccine this month for inoculation of children aged five to nine. The Public Health Service allocated 846000 shots to be distributed as states report needs and availability. This marks the first allocation under the department’s voluntary program prioritizing private doctors and health agencies.

Accidents Hit City In Weekend Crash Report

A weekend flurry of five auto accidents left two drivers arrested. Donald Keith Damon of Ulysses faces leaving the scene and revoked license issues after a collision near 10th and Fulton. A three car crash at Fulton and Washington led to charges for Johnny Junior Holland for following too closely. An additional wreck at Sixth and Fallen involved Mrs Clifford Gean Kells and Robert K McGaugh. Outside the city, David A Burnett of Summit was charged with driving while intoxicated after a single vehicle rollover near a county road west of the city limits. John Dinke of Garden City was uninjured as a passenger.

Bus Driver Clinic Planned in Garden City

Approximately 100 Western and Southwestern Kansas school bus drivers will attend the seventh annual one day clinic in Garden City on Saturday August 29. The program from 8 50 a m to 4 40 p m features topics from first aid to bus inspections with state highway officials, the Red Cross and Highway Patrol. Lost boy found at theater after second viewing

A six year old Edwin was reported lost by his mother Mrs. Lucien Downing at 9 46 p m. He had been in the theater since about 4 p m and was located thirty five minutes later watching the movie again.

Eleven Were Convicted of Spy Charges

Eleven U.S. airmen held in Red China since 1953 near two months in prison were ordered released. They were shot down in the Korean War and faced espionage charges after a 1953 court sentence. Names and sentences of the 11 were listed as tension eased in U.S.-China diplomacy.

Scouts Return From a Week Of Colorado Mountain Camp

About 100 Boy Scouts from seven Garden City troops ended a six day Rocky Mountain Camp trip near Buena Vista Colorado.
