Kansas agriculture drives state economy and jobs
Kansas depends on farming for 46.1 million acres and 230000 jobs. Agriculture accounts for 43 percent of the economy with a value over 62 billion dollars. Kansas leads in wheat, grain sorghum and beef, dairy expanding, and ag supplies raw materials for fibers and fuels. Kansas held 61 773 farms in 2015 down 6 percent from 2007 with about 46.1 million acres farmed. Average farm size rose to 747 acres, and the state ranks high nationally in cattle and hog production. Cattle on ranches and feedyards reached about 6 million as of Jan 1 2015, while hogs numbered around 1.8 million with 150 farms producing most pigs. The dairy sector includes 310 licensed herds producing about 341 million gallons of milk and five processing plants. The meat and dairy sectors together support thousands of jobs and billions in economic activity.
