Miners Rescued After Corker Mine Damps Near Platteville

In the Corker mine at Platteville two miners were overcome by dangerous damp gases. Living stone signaled for hoisting, was briefly lifted before collapsing. John Barker attempted rescue and also collapsed. F Tiende descended to bring the three men to the surface. all are now recovering.

Death of Charles Wenner former Galena resident

Charles Wenner aged 85 died in Linden Alabama after months of illness. Born in Württemberg Germany in 1819 he came to the United States at age eight, lived in Pittsburgh and Galena for over sixty years, and died May 24. He leaves four daughters and one son. Funeral was held Sunday at Ross's undertaking rooms with Rev. J. A. Matlack officiating. interment in Greenwood.

Crooks Loot State's Attorney Home During Freeport Parade

The Freeport police noted a burglary at State's Attorney L. H. Burrell's Foley street residence during the parade. About $800 in cash and valuables including two diamond rings and a Swiss watch were stolen. Neighbors saw two suspicious men. Dennis Maher reportedly had $10 pocketed. A man named John Renwick was detained by Captain Silk for acting suspiciously.

The Philippines will issue a distinctive six denomination series on July Fourth marking the first real Filipino postage stamps used. Six values carry U S portraits. the 4 centavo, matching our 2 cent stamp, will feature President William McKinley for the first time.

Memorial Day Sermons Across Local Churches

Memorial Day services were held at South Presbyterian, Methodist, and First Presbyterian churches with a First Presbyterian evening sermon on The Flag of Character. Rev J A Matlack preached on The Church and on Providence and Liberty highlighting the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man from biblical to national history. The sermon traced liberty through Magna Charta, the Declaration, and the Emancipation Proclamation, noting Gettysburg and Pickett’s Charge as turning points and honoring the Boys in Blue in shaping a free nation.

Galena Wins Two Games in Strong Baseball Rally

Galena defeated Platteville 5 to 2 after a sharp 1 hour 15 minute affair, with O Day executing a notable double play at third base. GROOM GETS LICENCE Under new law applicants must appear in person

A July 1 effective act changes marriage licensing rules. Applicants must personally appear before the license clerk, removing third party convenience. The act requires birth date and place, full ages, and parental consent for underage applicants, with minimum ages set at 19 for males and 16 for females unless guardians approve.

A Chicago Great Western train arriving in Dubuque carried a band of real Iggarettes from Portland bound for New York and Coney Island. Led by Mr. C. P. Stearnes, the troupe wore native red ribbon costumes and faced curious passengers and hackmen who paused to watch the odd parade on a cool day.

Smashed Thumb Injures Illinois Central Brakeman

Harry McCarty a well known Illinois Central brakeman whose parental home is in this city suffered a painful accident at Rockford Friday evening. He now resides at Freeport and the Bulletin of that place says Harvey McCarthy met with an accident last evening aboard the soldier's special out of Rockford. While passing from one car to another he slammed the door on his thumb, smashing it. He was brought to Freeport for care.
