Disastrous to Crops In Illinois Crop Bulletin May 15

County reports show minimal corn planting with rain flooding and wet soils in northern and central districts. Some oats damaged by hail. wheat and rye heading out. fruit trees and berries set heavy. Town notes: Galena case appeal and rural mail carrier exams reported.

Galena River Launch Owned by Sheriff Whitmore

Sheriff Whitmore now owns a fast naptha launch named Stilletto built in Red Wing Minnesota. The 20 foot craft has a three horsepower engine and can carry eight people. It was brought to Galena by its own power in three days by Clyde Whitmore, the sheriff’s son. A boat house addition lies beside Frank Owens’ boathouse, with gear to haul the craft in for shelter when returning from Yonker’s Lake or the Mississippi. A Dubuque party arrived aboard the launch Marguerite. Dwight Lamb drowned on the Mississippi near Bellevue last Friday afternoon.

Brick paving preferred over crushed stone in Freeport

In a letter dated May 17 1905 D A Callahan Freeport reports brick paving costs about 4.20 to 4.50 per running foot for 40 to 50 foot wide streets foundation laid with crushed stone and rolled contract work excludes curbing engineer favors brick over macadam and notes both methods used in Freeport Galena resident Owens shares publicized opinions supporting brick paving.

Trial Set in State v Harman Before Dubuque Judge O'Donnell

Ready for trial in Dubuque as the state faces Dr Harman with Mrs Harmon employing Fitzpatrick to assist. Chicago witnesses expected for the prosecution. Defense led by Alphons Matthews, M H Cleary, and Thomas H Duffy. County Attorney Barnes and Fitzpatrick to prosecute. The hearing may fill Friday and extend into the week with jury selection and full testimony.

Harry D Gilbert of Rockford has filed a voluntary bankruptcy petition in the U S court at Freeport through attorney H S Hicks. Liabilities total 188 16 and assets 265. It is the tenth case filed with clerk Callahan eight transferred from Chicago since the new court act. Referee A E Fisher of Rockford holds jurisdiction over Winnebago Boone Stephenson and Jo Daviess counties.

Galena Dominates Opener In Rainy Season Debut
