The Freeport Mining and Development Co reports high grade ore on the Pedesty farm near Benton and plans immediate shafting. Platteville investors and nearby firms push drilling from Fox Lead & Zinc to Good Hope and Columbia, with rising zinc prices and new power plants fueling optimism for mining districts.
The Weigel Mining Co of Platteville with forty shareholders, mainly local residents, seeks majority interest as six drill holes on the Weigle farm four miles southeast of Platteville reach ore at depths from 100 to 125 feet. Driller Willis provides the technical authority.
In Benton Wisconsin on May 8 the Etna mine lying east of the Benton Developing company shows five feet of rich ore at a depth of twenty eight feet. The ore body measures 26 feet wide and mining estimates hint at a possible mile length along the east west range. Past production was large, with several firms operating nearby but water hindered machinery. A new company now installs superior pumping and hoisting equipment to exploit the rich vein more efficiently.

At Potosi the Potosi Mining and Milling company drillers report a strong discovery at 127 feet. The shaft cut eleven feet of rich ore and every drill hole shows good ore. The latest strike is described as the best yet and could be a world beater.
Reports from Cuba City Wisconsin describe multiple mining advances as the Cuba City Lead and Zinc Mining company opens a rich mine and drifts southward. The Roosevelt Cook Pine Tree mines push progress with ore shipments and new shafts, while promising strikes fuel investor expectations for dividends within sixty days.
Work continues at Midway and Calumet mines while Pine Tree crews sink and drift at 90 feet and report high quality ore. Cuba City Lead and Zinc Min ing company held a Meloy and Brewer’s office meeting with strong sentiment to keep up the good work. Baxter company ships eight carloads of jack and one of lead. Ameri can Lead and Zinc property work has begun with the jack top reached. a drill is placed on north forty of Stephens property under Pine Tree lease.

The Richardson versus Black Hawk Lead Co case, transferred from Jo Daviess circuit court, ended when Judge Landis directed a verdict for the defendant. No evidence showed the accident caused by the company’s alleged negligence, prompting a non-suit and a possible retrial in state courts. Richardson, severely disabled, had claimed $25,000 damages from a mining tub accident at the Black Hawk mine near Elizabeth.
Mrs. Abbie Perham of Clinton Iowa says she is 140 years old and saw Washington era troops as a girl. She claims descent from a Creek Indian father and a Negro mother, with Fort Tuscumbia Alabama ties. Her birth records are lost, but she remains able to cook and care for her much younger husband despite blindness and rheumatism.
