Mines Thrive as New Machinery Arrives Near Hazel Green

The Murphy mine east of Hazel Green gains traction with a 150 horsepower boiler under construction at Galena Iron Works and plans to deliver soon. Zinc and lead market update from Rob Roy district

The week’s top zinc price reached 45 per ton for Rob Roy Mining ore with 60 percent zinc offered at 42 per ton and trades at 41 to 40. Lead sold around 78.5 per ton, with 78 and 76 as lower bids. Four months of shipments show zinc up 4,919 tons and lead up 2,253 tons versus last year, totaling a value rise of 349,450 dollars. Piling lists shipments by landowners and leases in the camps through April 28, 1906.

Aged Galena Resident Mr. Stehr Dies After Illness

Matthew Stehr, about 70, of Hickory street Galena, died at 6 oclock Tuesday after years of poor health. He was formerly a railroad worker and is survived by his wife and three children Louis of St Paul John of Prairie du Chien and daughter Letta who lived with the family. The funeral was held Thursday at 2 PM.
